Sustainable Tourism Guide

The imperative for every business to embrace sustainability is no longer up for debate. It's an existential necessity for our planet.

What's also indisputable is the tourism industry's impact on the natural and cultural wonders that inspire travel. As such, we're uniquely positioned to lead the charge towards genuine environmental stewardship.

That's why we've put together the Sustainable Tourism Guide. Yes, this document is a guide, but it's also an open invitation.

For too long, "sustainability" has been a buzzword rather than a guiding principle. One overly focused on a few small but widely accepted initiatives that are more open to accusations of "greenwashing" than actual progress. For real change to happen, we need to ditch the marketing spin and concentrate on measurable impact. How? By taking a more strategic approach to sustainability. One that requires organisations to commit fully to an end-point of zero waste and zero emissions across all operations. Hard as that may sound, anything less will ultimately fall short.

Reframing the approach

Our goal is to maximise the good we can do for people, communities, and the environment while minimising the harm our operations cause. In other words, we strive for a net-positive impact on the planet and the cultures that we're privileged to experience and share.

There are compelling commercial drivers for doing good for people and the planet. Increasingly, consumers are factoring environmental considerations into their purchasing decisions. Investors are funnelling more and more capital towards sustainable initiatives. And governments are making "social value" a prerequisite for public funding and partnerships. Quite simply, being "sustainable" is becoming ever-more essential future proofing your business whilst attracting customers, investors, and employees.

But beyond these commercial motivations lies a simpler truth: we cannot continue depleting the earth's finite resources. We're witnessing first-hand, and in slow motion, the catastrophic effects of an unsustainable model. In this context, tourism's enduring appeal rests on preserving the world's awe-inspiring natural assets, unique cultural experiences, and thriving local communities. Allowing their further degradation is both ethically perverse and an existential threat to our industry's long-term viability.

In the vibrant tapestry of sustainable tourism, we hope this guide offers a waypoint on your journey. It might serve as the building blocks for a masterpiece in responsible travel and tourism. From the simple, yet impactful, gestures for visitors to supporting local community initiatives, each idea is a small tile in the larger mosaic of a more sustainable future for the tourism industry.

A huge thank you to all of the team in pulling this guide together, including the inspirational organisations interviewed and sharing their journey with us.
